Restaurant Review: The Shropshire Golf Centre, Muxton – October 2009
The Shropshire Golf Centre has recently taken on a new Head Chef David Gibson, diners will be treated to a royal flavour as David has cooked for almost every member of the Royal Family. The 32-year-old spent 10 years at the Household Cavalry, based at Windsor, he has cooked for the Queen and Prince Philip as well as regularly cooking for Princes William and Harry as head chef in the regiment’s Officers’ Mess at Combermere Barracks. Since graduating from Thames Valley University, David has also worked at the four-star Runnymede Hotel, Surrey, The Chase Golf Club, Staffordshire, and has also worked for the world-renowned Roux brothers – Michel and Albert.
David has begun to introduce some of his specialities to the clubhouse menu. There are a variety of dishes available everyday in the clubhouse on the specials board and on Sundays a carvery is also available in the restaurant.
Living within a short walking distance from The Shropshire we are regular visitors to both the bar and restaurant and have attended a variety of functions over the last year. We have always found the staff extremely friendly and have got to know many of the regulars at the club - there is always a good relaxed atmosphere. It’s amazing how many people still don’t realise that you don’t have to be a member of the golf club to visit The Shropshire - whether you want to pop in for a homemade cake and a coffee, a drink with friends or a meal in the bar with the family you will always be welcomed.
We were invited to come and try the new Sunday carvery which is served between 12-3pm at £7.95 for 1-course, £11.90 for 2-courses and £15 for 3-courses.
For starters Nik ordered the Traditional Prawn Cocktail, juicy prawns served with a tangy sauce on a bed of fresh salad served with granary bread and I chose the Cream of Vegetable Soup which was a lovely thick creamy soup and was served with a warm crusty roll.
As well as the carvery there is also a choice of a vegetarian or fish dish. Children have the choice of the carvery or selection of children’s meal.
At the carvery there was a selection of four different meats to choose from including pork, beef, turkey or honey roast ham, Nik decided on the beef and I opted for the pork. There was a great selection of vegetables to choose from including roast potatoes, baby potatoes, carrots & cabbage, honey roasted parsnips, mashed swede and cauliflower cheese. Also available were Yorkshire puddings, pigs in blankets, crackling, a variety of sauces and of course - gravy!
We both enjoyed the carvery meals - the quality of the meats were excellent and the vegetables were all perfectly cooked.
There was a good choice of homemade desserts to choose from and I was tempted by the Profiteroles - I had two large profiteroles which had a strawberry sauce on top of them and covered with a lovely chocolate sauce - delightful! Nik chose the Raspberry Meringue Cheesecake which had a thick moist biscuit base and the topping was creamy, fluffy and light with melt in the mouth pieces of meringue.
Bookings are advisable for Sunday lunch and food is also served in the bar until 6pm on a Sunday. Monday to Saturday food is served until 9pm in the bar - there are always vegetarian dishes available and a variety of children’s meals.
The Shropshire is well known for its event nights with a variety of different themes such as 80’s nights, murder mystery, Motown nights, tribute bands, steak and shake nights - something for all age ranges - most events include a 2-course meal and a disco.
With Christmas fast approaching party nights and Christmas lunches are starting to get booked up - celebrate from mid November through to the middle of January with a variety of packages to choose from.
Much more than just a golf club - a lovely location, great food, friendly atmosphere - where EVERYONE is welcome!
